For the Christmas stockings shown in our idea, we used 1.5 balls per stocking knit felting wool . knit felting wool is made from 100% pure new wool. This is ideal for knitting with subsequent felting in the washing machine.
This is how knitting with the knitting ring works - First, tie the beginning of the wool to the pin on the side (end pin) Wrap each pin once from the inside out, i.e. wrap the yarn around all the pins in a loop.
- Then wrap another row so that the pins are all wrapped twice.
- Now start knitting off the stitches. Start with the last wrapped peg. Use the knitting hook to pick up the bottom stitch and pull it over the top stitch.
- Now simply continue wrapping and knitting alternately by repeating steps 2 and 3 until you have reached the length you need. If you want your socks to have a brim, knit around 16 rounds and then pull the new stitches onto the pins. Then pull the bottom stitch over the top stitch again.
- Now simply continue knitting until you have reached the desired length (in our case they were approx. 40 cm long).
This is how you finish your knitted piece Knotting Wrap the wool once around the ring and cut off the end.
Now thread the wool through the needle and pull it through each stitch and pull it together.
Finally, sew the wool from the inside so that it does not unravel and cut off the excess wool thread.
You can learn how to knit with the knitting ring step by step in photos in the basic instructions on this topic, instruction no. 3142.Washing / felting The knitted patterns shrink during washing = felting , which is why all pieces are first knitted much larger. However, they do not shrink evenly. They shrink by about 20% in width and about 30% in length. The felting process also depends on the washing machine, the selected program, the detergent and the temperature. If the felt parts are to shrink by 30 - 40%, we recommend a second wash cycle. This makes them very stiff, but also very hard-wearing.
As a general rule: Wash on the main wash cycle at 40° C, with a full color detergent and a spin cycle of at least 800 rpm. For a better felting process, add two tennis balls or gymnastic balls to the washing drum, as they will additionally flex the knitted items.
If the felting result is "too big", you can start a new wash cycle with a higher temperature and higher spin speed.
Drying Immediately after washing, knead the socks by hand while they are still wet until they have a sock shape. Then leave them to dry thoroughly.
Decorate Finally, you can attach a thread to the top of the sock so that you can hang up the new Christmas sock later. Decorate it further to your personal taste with tied bows and small sewn-on beads.
