Step 1: Choose the right surface
Choose the best surface for your project. Materials such as wood, cardboard, metal or terracotta are ideal. The advantage of napkin technique is its versatility, as you can apply napkins to almost any surface. However, please note that special paints may be required for certain materials such as wax for candles . You will find out more about this in our blog soon.
Step 2: Preparing the surface
To ensure that your napkin motifs stand out, your object should have a light-colored surface. If necessary, prime it with shades of white, creame- or yellow to achieve the best results.
Step 3: Prepare the motifs
As soon as the primer has dried, you can either cut out or tear out your desired motifs - depending on the effect you want to achieve. A cut-out motif creates a sharp outline, while a torn-out motif creates soft transitions.
Step 4: Layer napkin
Separate the printed part of the napkin from the lower layers. Normally, a napkin has three layers. You only need the top layer with the motif, the other layers can be thrown away.
Step 5: Apply napkin
When your substrate is dry, lightly coat it with napkin varnish. Before you finally apply the napkin , experiment to find the desired placement. Make sure to fix the motif gently with a soft brush from the inside out.
Let everything dry thoroughly.
Step 6: Seal the motif
To protect the motif permanently, apply a final coat of napkin varnish . This sealant ensures that your artwork remains beautiful for a long time.
The napkin technique offers countless variation possibilities by adding colors or effect varnishes. Just try it out and be surprised by the results!
