Preparation: Protect your work area and dampen the fabric
Before you start dyeing the T-shirt, carefully cover your work surface. This will prevent paint splashes from staining furniture or floors. Then put on gloves to protect your hands from the textile paint
Now spray the T-shirt evenly with water on both sides. The fabric should be well damp, but not dripping wet. Moistening is important so that the textile paint is later better distributed in the fabric and blends smoothly.
Creasing the T-shirt: The basis for the crumpled look
Lay the moistened T-shirt on the prepared surface and loosely shape it into a ball. Irregular folds are created when crumpling - these are exactly what give the typical crumpled effect later on. Gently press the ball of fabric together without pulling it smooth. The more irregular the folds, the more lively the pattern will be.
textile paint apply and work in
Now it's time to get colorful: apply the paint to both sides of the crumpled T-shirt. Make sure that all areas get color. Then knead the dye thoroughly into the fabric. This means that you gently press and move the ball so that the dye penetrates deep into the fibers and is evenly distributed.
This step is crucial for a harmonious color result. Take your time and work the color in carefully.
Carefully unfold the fabric and leave to dry
After dyeing, carefully unfold the T-shirt. Do not pull hard on the fabric to preserve the color gradients. Then hang up the T-shirt and leave it to dry completely. The color can only be fixed once the fabric is completely dry.
Fixing the color: For a lasting result
To ensure that your dyed T-shirt remains brightly colored even after washing, the color must be fixed. Fixing means that the color pigments are firmly bonded to the textile fibers using heat.
There are two ways to do this:
- In the oven: Preheat the oven to 150 °C and fix the T-shirt for around 8 minutes.
- With the iron: Iron the dry T-shirt to cotton temperature for around 3 minutes. Place a cloth between the iron and the fabric and work on an area of around 30 × 30 cm.
